Oliver Queen and his father are lost at sea when their luxury yacht sinks, apparently in a storm. His father dies, but Oliver survives for five years on an uncharted island and eventually returns home. But he wasn't alone on the island where he learned not only how to fight and survive but also of his father's corruption and unscrupulous business dealings. He returns to civilization a changed man, determined to put things right. He disguises himself with the hood of one of his mysterious island mentors, arms himself with a bow and sets about hunting down the men and women who have corrupted his city.

Did You Know?
While Thea Queen was initially an original character in the show (especially since Oliver was originally an only child in the comics) her inclusion in the series would lead to the creation of Emiko Queen in the comics during DC's New 52 event. Emiko like Thea is also Oliver's half-sister due to also being the illegitimate child of Oliver's father Robert and Shado). These characters would end up having a number of things in common, including being trained and used as an assassin by their other parent (Malcolm Merlyn for Thea and Shado for Emiko) and both would end up turning against them and joining their brothers' team. One of the code-names that Thea considered "Red Arrow" would end up becoming Emiko's code-name when she adapted her own superhero identity during the DC Rebirth event. See more
In the promotional picture for the series it shows a shirtless Oliver. The scars from his time on the island are visible, but there is no tattoo. During the series Oliver has a tattoo on his chest, a tattoo that plays an important role in at least one episode (1x03 "Lone Gunmen") and has been visible in every other episode. See more

So you're all fretting about this city dying. I'm here on behalf of an organization that wants you to let it die. See, death is a beautiful thing. We die, we go into the ground, our remains grow into flowers. It's only in the interval after dying that new things can sprout.
