Changing of the Guard at BAFTA La

  • Variety
Matthew Wiseman came to work for BAFTA La in 2002 for what he thought would be a short stint. The BAFTA Film Awards had just shifted their dates ahead of the Oscars and the Hollywood outpost was expanding.

“BAFTA was in such a growth spurt at that point, that I mentally thought I would be here for three years,” says the newly appointed CEO of BAFTA La, who starts his role Nov. 1. “But like many Brits, without any planning” he put down roots, including marrying a California native.

Wiseman’s initial role was to help expand the screening series; the BAFTA insiders program, which helps newcomers navigate Hollywood; and the tea party for Emmy nominees. Previously chief operating officer, Wiseman is succeeding Chantal Rickards as the chief exec as she returns to London at the end of this month after four years at the helm.

Playing a wily boat captain ushering a brother and sister (Jack Whitehall and Blunt) down the Amazon River as they look for a tree with extraordinary healing powers, Johnson navigates treacherous waters, athletically swings from tree branches, takes an inadvertent punch from Blunt in stride, and squares up to fight a shady villain.

“Of all the jungle cruises you could take in the Amazon, this one is undoubtedly the cheapest. But also the most thrilling,” Johnson says.

‘Jungle Cruise’ Trailer: Disney Turns Its Popular Theme Park Ride Into a Big Screen Family Adventure

“Of all the jungle cruises you could take in the Amazon, this one is undoubtedly the cheapest. But also the most thrilling!” Combining out-and-out thriftiness and a thirst for adventure is, well, not exactly the theme park way (so pricey!), but appears to be the guiding principle of at least one new Disney character with a heart of gold and a desire for a good deal. Based on the popular Disney Parks attraction of the same name, Jaume Collet-Serra’s “Jungle Cruise” spins off some of the sillier elements of the long-running boat ride and attempts to turn them into the kind of frisky, feel-good family adventure the studio has long been known for.

The adventure film stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a wily boat captain, with Emily Blunt (literally) on board as a determined explorer on a research mission into the heart of the jungle, where she believes
